Year 6-7 Transition Day

November 15, 2022 by Victoria Rawlings

Over the weekend, we held our Year 6-7 Transition Day event as a warm welcome to our incoming Year 7 Cohort who will be joining us in 2023.
It was fantastic to see our current students eager to help support their younger peers, who with their guidance, incoming students were able to explore our wonderful school and the facilities we have to offer. The day included the opportunity to sample subjects across Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Drama, Dance, Physical Education and Technologies.
Students also met their peers in their Home Room and work collaboratively with them through a number of ‘Ice-Breaker’ activities and the Harrisdale SHS Amazing Race Challenge!
We are excited to welcome the Year 7 2023 Cohort and look forward to helping you along your high school journey next year. We hope you enjoy the remaining weeks of your primary school journey – we will see you next year!

Yesterday, our Year 7 Student Councillors visit the City of Armadale Council Chambers to take part in a Leadership exercise. It was a fantastic day! Our students were highly engaged and behaved excellently. Students engaged in leadership activities throughout the day, including the opportunity to meet and speak with the Armadale Mayor Cr Ruth Butterfield and hear from Police Sergeant Simon Rimmer who talked about leadership and what it’s like to be on the Police Force. They also met and spoke with local media journalists and toured two museums.
This opportunity created a core memory for our Year 7 Student Councillors.

November 3, 2022 by Victoria Rawlings

Over the weekend, a number of Harrisdale SHS students attended the 2022 National History Challenge State Presentations. Our Year 10 students Raina, Lufei, Elana and Shruthi completed the activity as part of their Humanities and Social Sciences Formative Assessment for History, creating a website on 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘺𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘮 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺 and were selected as the National Winners in the category of their year level, and are the only National Winners from WA in 2022!
Based on the NHC theme for 2022, 𝘊𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴, they took us on a journey of Bollywood. As a result, these four Harrisdale students are off to Canberra at the end of the month!
In addition to the success of the above students, we would also like to congratulate our other winners;

Zero2Hero Chevron Compassionate Communities

October 28, 2022 by Victoria Rawlings

Our Student Councillors and Peer Support Leaders have been selected to be involved in the zero2hero Chevron Compassionate Communities Program. This program consists of a series of workshops and activities that explore topics relevant to young people with the intention of accessing and cultivating compassionate systems and motivation. Compassion for oneself and for others is an increasingly vital emotional skill that can help us navigate some of the most difficult realities of being human. The program includes creating compassionate school communities, emotional regulation, improving self-talk & self-care, recognising struggle in friends, family & communities, and aligning decision-making to the personal value system. Students will design and present a compassion-based project at Harrisdale SHS in connection with the local community. We look forward to this project created by students for the community.

Year 7 Wellbeing Program

October 27, 2022 by Victoria Rawlings

As part of our Wellbeing Program, our Year 7 students have had the opportunity to take part in various Mental Health and Well-being activities over the past couple of weeks.
They were joined by 2020 Tokyo Olympian, Shannon Reynolds, in partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport and the Black Dog Institute, who delivered a presentation on how to build Mental Fitness. Shannon shared some helpful tools and techniques for practising gratefulness, developing endurance and the importance of overall wellbeing.
The classes were also joined by Tom from HelpingMinds, who covered Safety on Social Media. This highlighted the benefits as well as some of the negatives of using social media, and ways to use it in a safe and healthy way.
