At Harrisdale Senior High School, Mathematics is a cornerstone of the curriculum, providing students with the essential skills to understand the world around them and succeed in various academic and real-world applications. Our Mathematics program is designed to challenge students at every stage of their learning, from Year 7 through to Year 12, and ensures they are well-equipped for future studies and careers.
In Years 7 to 10, the Mathematics curriculum focuses on developing students’ understanding and skills in key mathematical concepts, including algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics, and probability. The curriculum is structured to build on prior knowledge, with students working towards mastering foundational concepts that are vital for higher-level Mathematics in Senior School.
In Years 7 and 8 in particular, a focus is put on making key mathematical concepts visual, using many hands on activities to enhance students conceptual understanding, prior to turning to representational and abstract methods. A focus is put on mathematical reasoning and application to situations where students can see real value in using mathematics to understand their world.
Key topics covered in Years 7 – 10 include:
Students develop fluency in number operations, algebraic expressions, and equations. They explore concepts such as integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and solving linear equations.
Students apply geometric reasoning to calculate areas, perimeters, and volumes. They also study angles, geometric shapes, and coordinate geometry, which helps develop spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.
Students learn to collect, analyse, and interpret data. They develop the skills to calculate measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and probability, which are essential for making informed decisions in real-life situations.
Exploring the use of patterns and functions, students gain an understanding of how mathematical relationships can describe real-world phenomena.
The curriculum is designed to ensure that all students can develop their mathematical skills progressively, with more advanced concepts introduced as they grow in their understanding.
In Senior School, students can choose from a range of Mathematics subjects to cater to their future academic goals, whether in university, vocational education, or the workforce. The Mathematics curriculum for Years 11 and 12 is designed to challenge students further and deepen their mathematical knowledge in preparation for further studies or careers in fields such as science, engineering, economics, business, and technology.
Available courses in Years 11 and 12 include:
A practical course for students who wish to strengthen their mathematical skills for everyday life and career readiness. It covers topics such as budgeting, personal finance, measurement, and simple algebraic techniques. This course is designed to equip students with the mathematical skills needed for various vocational pathways.
This course is suitable for students who want to apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations. Topics include financial mathematics, statistics, and measurement, with an emphasis on using mathematical models to solve practical problems. Mathematics Applications is an ideal choice for students pursuing careers in business, social sciences, and the applied sciences.
This course provides a foundation for further studies in disciplines in which mathematics and statistics have important roles. It is also advantageous for further studies in the health and social sciences. In summary, this course is designed for students whose future pathways may involve mathematics and statistics and their applications in a range of disciplines at the tertiary level.
This advanced course is designed for students with a strong interest in mathematics and those pursuing careers in fields that require high-level mathematical expertise, such as physics, engineering, and mathematics itself. It covers topics such as complex numbers, calculus, vectors, and advanced probability and statistics.
In Year 12, students can also take Certificate II in Workplace Skills and other vocational education courses that include mathematical elements, depending on their career goals.
