As Term 2 comes to an end, we would like to share glimpses into just some of the events our students have been involved in over the past two weeks: debating, school camps, hospitality events, and a visiting artist.
Let’s start with debating:
Harrisdale SHS hosted Round 2 of the interschool debating competition, winning two of their four debates. It was fantastic to see our students showcasing great teamwork, leadership and public speaking skills.
Well done to our debating students – we’re really proud of you!
Bush Rangers Camp
Over the weekend, Harrisdale’s Year 9 and Year 10 Bush Ranger Cadets travelled to their camp site at Dryandra. Bush Rangers participated in a ‘Two Knowledges’ bushwalk with an Indigenous elder and a conservation biologist, and contributed to an environmental conservation program involving tree planting and rehabilitation work on farms in Pingelly.
Music Camp
While the Bush Rangers were camping at Dryandra, our Music students attended Harrisdale’s inaugural Music Camp, held at Woodman Point Recreation Camp. Over the course of their ‘long weekend’ of music making, students prepared for upcoming music festivals to be held in August, including the Concert Band, Choral and Classical Guitar Ensemble festivals.
Hospitality Students
This term our VET Hospitality students have been involved in real catering opportunities to gain experience in all the essential industry skills.
Recently, our Kitchen Operations and Hospitality students prepared and served a dinner to VET coordinators within the City of Canning schools cluster. The menu consisted of braised beef cheeks, homemade gnocchi, medley of vegetables and sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce. Impressive!
The students are also honing their catering skills in our in-house coffee shop, Willow Tree Café, open each Tuesday to offer staff and students a variety of menu items including an assortment of beverages and muffin of the day!
Visiting Artist
Earlier this week, Year 11 Visual Art students participated in a workshop run by East Fremantle based ceramic artist Philippa Gordon. Philippa demonstrated a range of clay modelling and printing techniques that students can apply to their Semester 2 clay sculptures project.
South of Swan Dance Festival
Congratulations to Harrisdale’s Dance students for their superb performances at the 2021 South of the Swan Dance Festival, held at the Octagon Theatre on 22 June. Here we share some images of students during their rehearsals at the Octagon.
