Harrisdale Extension Academic Program (HEAP)
A Heap of Possibilities
Harrisdale SHS is proud to offer an academically selective entry academic extension pathway – the Harrisdale Extension Academic Program (HEAP). Our new HEAP pathway is meticulously designed to immerse students in a learning model that cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving skills, creativity, and academic rigor. Aligned with our State Selected Academic Gifted and Talented classes, the HEAP pathway opens doors for more students in our area to realise their full potential.
From Years 7–10, HEAP students undertake extension courses in Mathematics, English, Science, and HASS (MESH), alongside standard curriculum. These courses are carefully designed to deepen understanding, build metacognitive skills, and spark intellectual curiosity.
Participation in enrichment activities and academic competitions helps students apply their skills in practical contexts while developing resilience, teamwork, and adaptability.
More Than Academics
HEAP fosters a vibrant, supportive learning environment where students connect with like-minded peers, engage in deep discussions, and collaborate on real-world projects. While academic achievement remains a core focus, we also prioritise wellbeing, leadership, and social-emotional growth—encouraging students to engage in extracurriculars, take on leadership roles, and actively contribute to the school community.
Selection
The HEAP pathway is designed for students entering Year 7 at Harrisdale Senior High School in the upcoming academic year. Selection for the program is based on an academic assessment and a formal interview.
The academic assessment includes sections on Reading Aptitude, Creative and Quantitative Mathematics, Complex Abstract Reasoning, and Academic Writing. Based on the Department of Education’s ASET, the test helps us form a high-performing cohort that complements our Gifted and Talented program.
No specific content knowledge or preparation is required, and sample questions will not be provided. Please note that an administration fee applies to cover the cost of the test.
Students who perform well on the assessment will be invited for an interview. During this stage, they can present their achievements and work samples through a portfolio discussion with our Director of Innovation and academic team.
